Audiology
An audiology consultation is a comprehensive diagnostic process that assesses hearing and balance through a series of stages.
How the audiological examination is carried out
1. Initial consultation (detailed medical history)
The specialist gathers information on the patient’s medical history, reported symptoms, daily habits and any exposure to noise or trauma. Family history and the use of any medication that may affect hearing are also taken into account.
2. Otoscopic examination
The doctor examines the ear canal and the eardrum using an otoscope, checking for earwax, inflammation, abnormalities or signs of infection.
3. Audiometric assessment

The examination includes several audiometric tests, including:

Pure-tone threshold audiometry: measures the hearing threshold at different frequencies.

Speech audiometry: assesses speech understanding.

Impedance audiometry: analyses the proper functioning of the middle ear and the stapedial reflex.
These tests are painless, non-invasive and provide an accurate picture of the patient’s hearing ability.
4. Vestibular tests (where indicated)
If the patient experiences vertigo or balance disorders, specific tests may be carried out, such as:

Videonystagmography (VNG)

Caloric tests

Posturography

Romberg’s test and motor coordination test
These tests help to identify any problems with the vestibular system.
5. Interpretation of the results and treatment plan
At the end of the assessment, the audiologist:

Explains the results clearly and in a way that is easy to understand

Suggests rehabilitation programmes (vestibular rehabilitation or auditory training)

Designs hearing aid solutions in cases of hearing loss
