Pre-conception tests

When considering pregnancy, it is essential to approach this time with peace of mind and awareness.
Preconception health plays a key role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and promoting the well-being of the foetus.
Preconception tests are designed to assess general health and identify any risk factors before conception.
These tests, which are specific to women and men, are prescribed by a GP or gynaecologist based on individual needs.
RECOMMENDED TESTS FOR WOMEN:
-
gynaecological examination
-
Pap test
-
indirect Coombs test, to check for the presence of antibodies against red blood cells;
-
rubella test, to determine immunity to rubella;
-
complete blood count, to assess whether the woman is anaemic. An assessment of abnormal haemoglobin types is carried out to determine whether she is a carrier of thalassaemia (in which case the same test is also carried out on her partner, to ascertain the likelihood of a risk of severe anaemia in the unborn child).
-
vaginal swab
-
pelvic ultrasound scan
-
blood group and Rh factor
-
HIV test
-
HDL and LDL cholesterol, antithrombin III, fibrinogen, PT, PTT, complete blood count, blood glucose, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, transaminases, urine analysis.
RECOMMENDED TESTS FOR MEN:
-
Blood group and Rh factor
-
HB electrophoresis
-
Complete blood count (including assessment of abnormal haemoglobins to determine whether the patient is a carrier of thalassaemia), blood glucose, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, transaminases, urine analysis
-
HBsAg, HCV, HIV
-
Depending on individual medical histories or following previous conditions, the gynaecologist may request further tests:
-
a consultation with a geneticist;
-
chromosome analysis;
-
an ultrasound scan;
-
a hysteroscopy with a possible endometrial biopsy;
-
blood tests to check for any autoimmune conditions.
