GYNAECOLOGY

Medical Consultation

The aim of a gynaecological examination is to assess the health of the female reproductive organs and to rule out any medical conditions.

It may be necessary for:

  • to understand the causes of menstrual cycle disorders

  • to find a method of contraception that suits you, or, conversely, to plan a pregnancy or confirm whether you are pregnant

  • issues relating to sexual intercourse (such as pain), breast-related problems and menopause-related disorders

  • to have a regular check-up, which provides an opportunity for secondary screening for cervical cancer, fibroids or pelvic endometriosis.

HOW DOES THE CONSULTATION WORK?

A gynaecological examination always includes a thorough review of the patient’s medical history. The doctor will ask about the patient’s medical history and that of the women in her family, any current symptoms, and any medical conditions or operations she has undergone in the past.

The actual gynaecological examination involves an examination of the external genitalia and a breast examination. At the Metica Medical and Physiotherapy Centre, the examination always includes an ultrasound scan.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • Gynaecological examinations and smear tests are normally carried out when you are not having your period,

  • it is usually best to have the examination with an empty bladder,

  • if specific tests are planned, you may need to attend with a full bladder,

  • for the insertion of an IUD, you need to be on the 3rd or 4th day of your period.

The doctor will always ask whether the patient has had any recent tests: the date of her last Pap test, her most recent blood tests or any other specialist investigations. In this regard, it is a good idea to always bring all your test results with you and to prepare a brief summary of any family and personal medical history.
