SPORTS MEDICINE

Metica is a private sports medicine centre. Dr Chiara Vigo is the Director of the Sports Medicine Department.
A sports medical examination should be regarded as a life-saving check-up, not only for those seeking clearance to participate in competitive or non-competitive sport, but also for anyone wishing to safely take up any form of physical activity.
In Italy, the sports fitness examination is a preventive measure and is required by law.
How does the medical assessment for eligibility to take part in competitive sport take place?
The visit consists of:
-
completion of the admission forms,
-
collection of a urine sample,
-
medical examination,
-
spirometry,
-
resting electrocardiogram,
-
pre- and post-exercise electrocardiogram (step test) or exercise test on a cycle ergometer.
Its purpose is to issue the competitive sports certificate which allows participants to take part in sporting competitions.
EXERCISE TEST ON A CYCLE ERGOMETER: what’s new in 2018
A stress test (or ergometric test) is a diagnostic procedure that involves recording an electrocardiogram before, during and after physical exertion (unlike a resting ECG, which is recorded whilst the patient is at rest). The cycle ergometer is a specialised exercise bike equipped with electronic controls to regulate the level of exertion exerted by the patient.
This makes it possible to examine the cardiovascular system’s response to physical exercise, particularly with regard to heart rate, blood pressure response and any ECG abnormalities. During physical exertion, conditions arise that increase the workload on the heart, which may reveal abnormalities that are not detectable at rest.
How does the medical assessment for non-competitive sport take place?
The visit consists of:
-
completion of the admission forms,
-
medical examination,
-
which may also include a resting electrocardiogram and pre- and post-exercise electrocardiograms (step test).
Its purpose is to issue a certificate for non-competitive sporting activities for those who attend gyms, swimming pools and various courses.
