WHAT IS OPHTHALMOLOGY?
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, rehabilitation and both medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the visual system.
HOW DOES THE CONSULTATION WORK?
An eye examination involves a specialist assessing the health of the eyes; in addition to examining the patient’s visual function, the specialist carries out a biomicroscopic examination of the various segments of the eye (anterior and posterior) in order to identify any risk factors or existing eye conditions.
The examination consists of several stages: in the first stage, also known as the medical history, the doctor seeks to gather as much information as possible about the patient’s lifestyle and any family history of eye conditions. This is followed by the actual eye examination, which involves inspecting all the external parts of the eye: an assessment of the eyelids, the surrounding tissue, the space between the eyelids, the eyelashes, the conjunctiva, the sclera, the cornea and the iris.
This is followed by a series of specific tests to determine visual acuity, pupil function and the motility of the eye’s external muscles.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
No special preparation is required for an eye examination. However, it is advisable for contact lens wearers to stop wearing their lenses at least one day before the appointment.
