PERIODONTOLOGY
Periodontology is the branch of dentistry concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and maintenance of the soft and hard tissues surrounding the tooth (periodontal tissues), namely the gums, alveolar bone, root cementum and periodontal ligament.
Periodontal disease is very common in the general population, with signs and symptoms that can vary from person to person. It affects people over the age of 35 and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
CAUSA
The causes of periodontal disease can be attributed to the build-up of bacteria between the teeth and gums resulting from food debris which, if not removed properly, turns into bacterial plaque and subsequently into tartar, which then becomes embedded beneath the gums.
SYMPTOMS
Although periodontal disease does not usually cause pain, certain symptoms should be regarded as warning signs: bleeding gums, loose teeth, pain when brushing, and bad breath.
PREVENTION The only way to prevent the onset of the disease is through regular oral hygiene.
